Finetec, pearl colours - worth it?
Saturday, April 15, 2017I have to admit, I was a total sheep when it came to this finetec palette because I had seen it EVERYWHERE. I was mesmerised as I was beginning to learn watching everyone post their beautiful videos and I knew I wanted to try and get my hands on this stunning palette, but was it worth it?
Now, this paragraph is for all my caligrafriends in the UK. Don't you hate seeing people use beautiful pens/palettes/stamps etc elsewhere in the world to find it isn't available in the UK or will cost you an actual fortune to import? Me too! So, I was totally elated to find this wonderful website called Penman Direct who sell lots of amazing calligraphy goodies at such reasonable prices! I bought my finetec pearl colour palette from them for £22.99, a big saving from the £29.50 that Quill London were asking (even though I adore their stuff too, I'm hoping to visit their store soon!)
So, when my palette arrived I was quite taken aback at how much smaller it was than I had expected:
Now, it's by no means a tiny palette but I had seen the finetec gold palettes and was expecting the same size. I decided to give it a go though and see how pigmented the colours were and how they worked with my new oblique pen!
I was so happy that after using it twice it seemed as thought I had barely touched the palette! I also did a swatch test at this point and was totally blown away at how rich and pigmented the colours were. I actually squealed with delight whilst doing the swatch test if that's any indication of how happy I was with this palette!
I wasn't getting on too well with my oblique pen though (I'm still practicing with this!) so decided to try using them as I would my normal watercolours but on black card.
The colours worked beautifully together, I was totally in awe of the floral wreath I had just made when I painted this. I even sent it to my mum and she asked for her mother's day card to be done with these colours! The colours used for this piece were: blue-green, shining pink and fine gold.
I also found that this palette works well when blended with my normal wisnsor&newton cotman water colours. I've used it to create stars in galaxy pieces using a splat technique and also to make shining polka dots behind some lettering for a birthday card.
They're super effective in both instances, the photo doesn't do the card justice but it looked really nice once up on the mantelpiece in the sunlight!
Finally, I'll leave you with one final piece which I made this evening because I felt I'd been neglecting this palette a bit:
I mean, can you even?! I can't! This palette totally lives up to the hype and is worth investing in if you want to start adding some shimmer to your lettering or watercolour pieces!
Overall, I'd give this palette a 9/10, just because I was disappointed to start with because of the size which I feel could be deceptive to others buying this but I hope this review is helpful to anyone considering buying this!
